Traveling with just a smartphone or opting to carry an additional camera is purely a matter of personal lifestyle preference. Undeniably, the world has shifted towards prioritizing smartphones as all-in-one devices. However, those who were accustomed to using cameras before the smartphone era still find value in carrying a camera for high-quality shots. Modern smartphones, despite their advancements, still lag behind dedicated cameras due to superior lenses and a wider range of lenses for diverse creative possibilities.
The allure of a smartphone lies in its pocket-sized convenience, ensuring that unique moments can be instantly shared—a feature that traditional cameras struggle to match. For newer generations, choosing a smartphone might be an obvious decision. However, individuals spanning different generations continue to find comfort and confidence in capturing remarkable photographs with dedicated cameras. These cameras remain purpose-built devices solely for photography.
Carrying a camera with multiple lenses or even two cameras becomes essential for seasoned travelers who have experienced the frustration of a camera malfunctioning during a trip. Having a reliable backup camera is a must. While this approach adds weight to the luggage, decisions must be made regarding which lenses to bring, as well as whether to include a tripod. Moreover, the practice of maintaining a travel journal, jotting down experiences and attaching physical mementos, persists despite its lack of practicality compared to digital journals. This old-fashioned journal serves as a keepsake or a gift, unlike its digital counterpart where data loss could result in irretrievable content. Preserving memories through handwritten entries holds a unique power—writing aids in memory retention, especially when done by hand.
Nonetheless, I’m also contemplating a full transition to digital media. Yet, the question remains: do we truly have the time to revisit past captures and creations? Perhaps, in the end, focusing on what lies ahead might be more beneficial.
